A turbocharger or “turbo” is a gas compressor used for forced-induction of an internal combustion engine. The purpose of this part is to increase the density of air that enters the engine, thus creating more power. But that isn't exactly the BMW Turbo we will be discussing. As a celebration for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, the E25 BMW turbo prototype was built. For this celebratory occasion, Paul Bracq, one of the world’s leading automotive designer/artists most known for the Mercedes-Benz 600, came up with a crafted, innovative design for a new BMW automobile, the BMW Turbo . There were only two of these BMW Turbos every built. To this day, it is one of the rarest BMW’s, if not the rarest BMW out there. The BMW Turbo was custom made with gullwing doors, which are hinged to the ceiling of the car, and a super futuristic cockpit. On the interior of the Turbo there were a number of safety features and on the exterior, there was a super large window, and a proportionately balanced sloping front. Of course the BMW Turbo was powered by the 4-cylinder 1990cc turbocharged engine with 280 hp at 5200 rpm. 165 mph was its maximum speed. The BMW Turbo was BMW’s first mid-engined car. Its theme was later used as a design for the M1, the 8-Series, the Z1, as well as the 2008 M1 Homage Concept. In 1973, Bracq’s Turbo was awarded the Concept Car of the Year for his strikingly elegant design. Currently you can see one BMW Turbo on display at the BMW Museum in Munich, Germany. The other is at the BMW Zentrum Museum in Spartanburg, South Caroline, USA. To find out more about the BMW Turbo or to order a turbocharger for your classy BMW click on the link above.
